Ruins of Gianthold (epic)

From DDO wiki
(Redirected from Ruins of Gianthold (Epic))
Jump to navigation Jump to search
950 DP Requires access to adventure pack: Ruins of Gianthold
Spoilers!
The various details of the Epic map are different than on the Heroic version.

Frozen crystals, lava, and upturned rock formations still reveal the devastation caused by the ancient war between the giants and the dragons.

Epic version of Ruins of Gianthold is a level 24 Wilderness Adventure Area, allowing characters level 20 through 28 full XP rewards. For the heroic version, see Ruins of Gianthold (heroic).

Gianthold Farshifter[edit]

The farshifter in Gianthold, Narkonk, can teleport you to the Heroic/Epic version of three faction locations: Storm's Eye (far west), Storm's Heart (south-central), or Storm's Fist (far east), shown in aqua on the Heroic Gianthold map. This can save a lot of running time when getting to far away quests.

  • You can only be shifted to a location that you have already found (by walking there).
  • The Icon for this NPC is a yellow X instead of the green "star" typically used to port to a different zone.
  • Using the NPC gives you the normal quest entry dialog box, allowing you to choose the usual options.

If you have already unlocked the teleport destinations in Heroic, you can use the teleport NPC in Epic without needing to find the locations again in the Epic wilderness. However, you need to enter the wilderness at least once through the normal entrance in order to be granted the Slayer/Rare/Explorer quests — if you enter for the first time through the teleport dialog, the quests are not granted and you will gain no XP from slaying or exploring.

Quests[edit]

Three of the quests in this area are given by NPCs located within the Gianthold city area:

Return to Madstone Crater[edit]

Return to Prison of the Planes[edit]

Return to Cabal for One[edit]

The quests located within the wilderness area are:

The Crucible[edit]

A Cry for Help[edit]

Feast or Famine[edit]

Foundation of Discord[edit]

The Maze of Madness[edit]

Trial by Fire[edit]

Random Encounters[edit]

Each will appear on the map as a gold coin when you are nearby (not before); the first objective will spawn when you are somewhat closer.

  • A Smaller ProblemBrawnpits asks you to recover 3 Ancient Giant Totems. 1 chest with 1 random Restored Relic for each totem (can be done singly); completion & XP when you turn in all three. (3,000 XP)
  • A Grim Turn of EventsProtect the Grim brothers from the Dragon - Save our old friends Nale Grim and Thum Grim from the white dragon Skanaal. 2 chests, which each drop 1 random Restored Relic. (1,500 XP)
  • Zoarinnia's GambitSpeak to Zoarinnia - Choose from a series of dialog options (including identifying yourself as Jeets looking for a tavern or Cellimas on her way to church!). 2 chests if you choose to kill the dragon. These chests each drop 1 random Restored Relic. (3,000 XP)
  • While Dragons DreamOpen the chest without waking the Dragon - Fight green dragon Barrenon if you fail (no XP); 1 chest with 1 random Restored Relic. (3,000 XP)

Bonus for solving all encounters: 2,700 XP

Note: These encounters can spawn during your time in the area in place of other encounters at the same location. See Respawns section below.

Hobgoblin campfire: this must qualify as a cooking fire
This chest is trying to hide...maybe it's a mimic?

Unregistered Encounters[edit]

Four additional random encounters, including two with a chest, are possible in the area.

  • Not registered as part of the Random Encounters quest and award no XP beyond that for slayer progress when killing the monsters present.
  • Appear as a small campfire that is not a permanent part of the area map surrounded by a variety of monsters from one of the Gianthold factions--some sleeping, stealthed, and/or non-targettable--and possibly a chest
    • 1-3 Aurum
    • 3 Aurum + chest
      • Chest will be locked until the mob is killed
    • 2 Hobgoblins
    • 5 Hobgoblins + chest
  • Hobgoblin campfires (see image) are not found anywhere else in the area
  • Each faction tends to appear in the part of the area that includes their Quarter: Aurum in the Northwest and Hobgoblin in the Northeast
  • Due to the non-level terrain of some spawn sites, the chest may be nearly invisible (see image).

Note: These encounters can spawn during your time in the area in place of other encounters at the same location. See Respawns section below.

Rare Encounters[edit]

Each Rare Encounter is worth 4,050 XP, with a bonus 16,200 XP for defeating all of them. Aside from Arkelon, chests spawn upon completion.

Notes:

  • All encounters occur randomly in two or more possible locations specific to the encounter. No spawn locations are mapped, unlike those of similar wilderness areas (eg: The Demonweb).
  • Mannth and Ferros are considerably more rare than the others.
  • These encounters can spawn during your time in the area in place of other encounters at the same location. See Respawns section below.

Words of the Ancient Ones[edit]

Stormreaver's musings appear as a giant sword; Truthful One's teachings as a spear with a skull

Each Explorer is worth 2,025 XP, with a 14,679 Bonus for locating everything.

Dialogue spoken by the Stormreaver:

  • Find the Stormreaver's first musing: Stormreaver's Words 1 - Once again I return to this land of never-ending war. Giants versus dragons, the landscape itself shaped by hatred. However, this time my purpose is just. I will protect giantkind from the enemy. The enemy I know to be the Truthful One.
  • Find the Stormreaver's second musing: Stormreaver's Words 2 - After my rebirth and my days of madness, I took refuge in Siber Atoll. I was a guest of Argonessen. [sic] More like a caged bird, in truth, but I did not mind. Much had taken place. I had much to think upon.
  • Find the Stormreaver's third musing: Stormreaver's Words 3 - For too long has The Truthful One plagued giantkind. The blood of generations stains this ground. Ending this conflict begins with his death.
  • Find the Stormreaver's fourth musing: Stormreaver's Words 4 - The Truthful One once brought me back to life, clouded my mind, and compelled me to destroy. Now, my mind is clear, and I know who the enemy is.
  • Find the Stormreaver's fifth musing: Stormreaver's Words 5 - Giant brothers, hear me. This is our final war with The Truthful One. One of us will fall. Let us fight hard, and make sure that giantkind wins this day.
  • Find the Stormreaver's sixth musing: Stormreaver's Words 6 - All this in-fighting, giant against giant, clan against clan. What happened to the proud race I once knew? We have lived through enough insanity , no [sic] need to cause more amongst ourselves.
  • Find the Stormreaver's seventh musing: Stormreaver's Words 7 - I am here once again to meet my destiny. The first time, it was the Quori. The second, my own madness. This time, it is to kill The Truthful One.
  • Find the Stormreaver's eighth musing: Stormreaver's Words 8 - Among these ruins I saw a giant and a dragon, frozen in time. We too are frozen, locked in conflict, generation after generation. I hear much about a Prophecy, yet this bloodshed is caused by hatred, not some eternally-written message to us all.
  • Find the Stormreaver's ninth musing: Stormreaver's Words 9 - I will strike The Truthful One down with his own deceit! He created this stage for dragon and giantkind to do battle, and used our longstanding conflict to fuel yet another attempt at domination. I must drag the puppet master out of hiding, and cut the strings that bind us once and for all.
  • Find the Stormreaver's tenth musing: Stormreaver's Words 10 - Throughout my life, I have visited this land to fight, kill, wander, think. I love these hills, these mountains, and these fields. They have become a part of me.
  • Find the Stormreaver's 11th musing: Stormreaver's Words 11 - We both should have died to defeat the Quori, so many years ago. The Truthful One failed us in his greed for life, and failed again when he brought me back, drenched in madness, to do evil. When he dies, it will be at my hand, staring at him with eyes that would be devoid of life, were it not for his own actions.
  • Find the Stormreaver's 12th musing: Stormreaver's Words 12 - I must never again let the Truthful One's thoughts worm into my mind. Once, under his spell, I built a device that would have wrought a second cataclysm on Xen'drik. It is harmless now, but I leave it undestroyed. It contains mysteries I do not understand.
  • Find the Stormreaver's 13th musing: Stormreaver's Words 13 - The Truthful One is leading these attacks, but like a coward, he fails to show up on the field of battle. Perhaps I may have to force his hand!
  • Find the Stormreaver's 14th musing: Stormreaver's Words 14 - The time for wandering this land is over. Now the time for action begins. I must head to the Tor, and prepare for my final act as a warrior.

Dialogue spoken by the Truthful One:

  • Find the Truthful One's first teaching: Truthful One's Teachings 1 - The giants never deserved the sacrifice I made for them. Not now, not ever!
  • Find the Truthful One's second teaching: Truthful One's Teachings 2 - There's little I regret, but heeding the pathetic Stormreaver during the war against the Quori is one of my greatest blunders. He nearly had me sacrifice my life. A dragon dying to save giants would be shameful. Their screams as we crush them will be their payment for my error.
  • Find the Truthful One's third teaching: Truthful One's Teachings 3 - The Stormreaver and I sacrificed ourselves to cast the spell that defeated the Quori all those years ago. They called it Reaver's Bane, but blamed ME for its failure, claiming that I didn't sacrifice enough. I contest that claim! It's not my fault the giants were too weak to dominate the land they ruled. Those with power must support it with mind and might! The giants had little of either, and failed.
  • Find the Truthful One's fourth teaching: Truthful One's Teachings 4 - These pitiful creatures wonder why Velah had to die in the Vault of Night. The answer to such a simple question is easy: She died because I wished it to happen. The world was not ready for the prophecy she sought to reveal, those words must remain secret for now. Anything that denies me victory must be treated as the enemy. Audio says: ...victory will be treated...
  • Find the Truthful One's fifth teaching: Truthful One's Teachings 5 - I delight in watching my dragons use the giants for sport. The giants call it battle, but how can such an easy victory be considered an actual conflict? We dragons call it having a bit of fun with our food.
  • Find the Truthful One's sixth teaching: Truthful One's Teachings 6 - The Stormreaver is once again serving as my incontrovertible puppet. He does my bidding and furthers my plans despite his complete ignorance that he does so. It will be amusing to see the look of horror on his face when he discovers that he is my unwitting ally!
  • Find the Truthful One's seventh teaching: Truthful One's Teachings 7 - I will not be denied the joy off [sic] seeing all giant-kind laid to waste. My plan is too brilliant! These simpletons are unable to see their own destruction coming for them. Watching their downfall will be a moment I will savor for all eternity.
  • Find the Truthful One's eighth teaching: Truthful One's Teachings 8 - My dragons are serving me well. Their power cannot be contained by giantkind, or even the supine and uncertain chamber of Argonnessen. I've looked forward to seeing them serve me again in undeath. Nothing says power like power reborn.
  • Find the Truthful One's ninth teaching: Truthful One's Teachings 9 - Argonnessen and their slavish attention to prophesy. Their study turns to (flounder?), because they fail to understand what they see! They need a better guide, and who better than me to serve that role?
  • Find the Truthful One's tenth teaching: Truthful One's Teachings 10 - Look at these giants, in their foolish disarray! It's amusing to watch from above and see them scurry about like rats. Somewhat large rats, yes, but rats nonetheless. I am glad my dragon disciples are disposing of them like the vermin they are.
  • Find the Truthful One's 11th teaching: Truthful One's Teachings 11 - Have the giants always been this stupid, clumsy, and weak? It seems like they've gotten even weaker over the years. They walk into my trap so easily. I'd almost prefer a little more...sport...as I watch their kind crumble.
  • Find the Truthful One's 12th teaching: Truthful One's Teachings 12 - I knew the Stormreaver would be unable to sit idly by while his kind gathered into my trap. When they die together, it'll be a truly exquisite moment! Audio says: ...die together, it will be a...
  • Find the Truthful One's 13th teaching: Truthful One's Teachings 13 - Seeing my last plan fall apart during its final moments was an unfortunate experience. I so look forward to seeing the Reaver's Bane used to lay the land bare! But I will not be denied the pleasure of watching giantkind die this time. Audio says: ...of watching giantdom die...
  • Find the Truthful One's 14th teaching: Truthful One's Teachings 14 - Unlike the sinuous and tentative nature of prophecy, I KNOW what the future holds. Dragons will kill giant after giant, thinning the herd until I activate the Doomsday Device, while a shocked Stormreaver watches and sees his role in his race's undoing! It will be an excellent end to a long war.
  • Find the Truthful One's 15th teaching: Truthful One's Teachings 15 - It was unfortunate to lose my body all those years ago, but I do enjoy some aspects of being undead. To be able to think free of the worry of mortality is a freeing experience!

Bug: Several missing dialogue pop-ups: Truthful One's Teachings 2, 3, 8 & 9

Bug: The audio and DM chat dialogue from the Heroic Explorer quest occurs in the following 5 locations (out of 20):

  • Storm's Heart Summit
  • Entrance to Madstone Crater
  • Entrance to Troll Lair
  • Entrance to Minotaur Lair
  • The Doomed Brother
    • All are in the Southern part of the Storm's Heart Territory, but even within that part of the area, it's not all of them.

Loot[edit]

Chests[edit]

In addition to those from Random and Rare Encounters, 3 chests always appear in the area:

  • At the top of Crystal Spin Peak (see Map of Ruins of Gianthold (heroic)), there is an Ancient Flayer with a locked chest (unlock DC undetermined) that appears after it is killed.
  • At the Aurum Supply Depot (see Map of Ruins of Gianthold (heroic)), smash many (~15) breakables to trigger an ambush by the Aurum Supply Master and 2 Gold Concord Clerics. Kill the Aurum Supply Master to have an unlocked chest appear next to the main tent.
  • At the end of Feast or Famine, if you take the passage used by the hunting party optional, you will exit to the Orc Quarter where there is a locked chest on the South side of the central campfire. Kill every mob to spawn a party including an Orc Huntmaster adjacent to the chest. Upon spotting you, the Huntmaster will declare, "They have come for our hoard, kill them now!" You need only kill the Huntmaster to unlock the chest.
    • You can also reach the Orc Quarter with sufficient Jump and Abundant Step or similar (see note on NW part of map). After your jump, trigger initial mobs to spawn by approaching the passage exit to the East.

Relics[edit]

Chests described in Random Encounters and the persistent ones described above all yield one random restored relic:

Ransacked chests and Rare Encounter chests never contain a relic.

Collectables[edit]

Only 3 Collectables are available, all in the Storm's Fist Territory:

Monsters[edit]

Respawns

  • One Runetusk Scout that patrols the West side of the giant camp North of Truthful One's Teachings 14
    • continuously respawns every 3 minutes
  • A party of 1 Arzag-Khor Loremaster, 1 Cloven-Jaw Scout, and 1 Windlasher Ripper at a small camp below the Easternmost bridge over the lava river
    • individuals continuously respawn every 3 minutes
  • One Fire Giant Captain in the valley Northeast of Stormreaver's Words 12
    • respawns once after 3 minutes
  • Any Random Encounter or unregistered random encounter, including those spawned by this mechanic
    • after 15 minutes and when the site is unobserved, the NPC, chest(s) (opened or not), and/or campfire are removed and the site nearly always spawns a new:
      • Rare Encounter
      • Random Encounter
      • unregistered random encounter
        • the Hobgoblins with no chest tend to respawn once or twice with random specific monsters
      • standard mob for the hook point
    • Note: after 15 minutes, may need to move further away for ~1 minute to trigger the spawn
